Overview
Macherey-Nagel aluminum oxide is produced by dehydration of different aluminum hydroxides, for example hydrargillite between 400 and 500ºC. Activity grade is a function of water content and Grade 1 is the driest.
Activity grade I, particle size 50-200 µm, specific surface (BET) ~ 130 m2/g.
Aluminum Oxide has been used for many years as an adsorbent in column chromatography. It is versatile, has large capacity, is insoluble and relatively inert. Due to its amphoteric character, Aluminum Oxides can be used in specifically defined pH ranges.
Adsorption is different from silica gel. It is good in separation of aromatics from olefins, for terpenes, alkaloids, steroids, aliphatic and aromatic compounds
